I was most surprised by what I've gained beyond simple facts and concepts. Before I became a non-traditional college student, I spent years avoiding college. This was due to the false idea that a degree is simply a piece of paper. Through my experience at WCC, I've come to realize that the degree is much more than that. It's a symbol of all of the hard work, obstacles overcome, and skills gained during your time as a student. It's an affirmation of your ability to adapt and work through trying times.

After all, knowledge gained in the classroom is more than knowledge simply gained because it is done under pressure. In this way, we grow tougher and more resilient. That's what employers want to see. I think it's yet to come. I started a novel in this program that served as my thesis and is still in progress. If it turns out the way I hope it does, it will easily be my biggest success.

People always told me that if I didn't slow down, I'd burn out. I think my biggest triumph has been my ability to speed up, instead of slow down. I graduated from Yonkers Middle High School in the top ten of my class, and was always an active and willing participant in both the academic and school community. I juggled a full course load of all science classes, three extracurricular clubs on campus 2 of which I was co-President of and four part time jobs! Junior year consisted of a lot of motivation… and coffee! About two months before my freshman year started, my entire world was turned upside down—on July 23, , my little brother Jimmy died from Cystic Fibrosis.

He was only 15 years old. To be honest, there were days over the course of my college career that were supposed to be happy days, but a lot of them just felt incredibly empty without my brother there. The first day of school was incredibly hard. Every time I read a book and death was involved it made me sad. All of his birthdays were so difficult to get through, especially when I was away for softball for spring training, and all of my academic award ceremonies were not the same without him there.

My graduation was extremely sad too, especially when I reflected on the fact that four years ago, he was sitting in the audience at my high school graduation. Although my brother is not physically here anymore, I try to do everything I can to the best of my ability and it's all for him.

I thank him so much for guiding me and enabling me to be where I am today. I love you Jimmy! I've only gotten my Associate's Degree so far, so I'll still be pursuing my Bachelor's when I attend Fordham this fall. If I wasn't doing that, I'd love to spend time traveling. It'll be my first time out of the country! Preparing for this opportunity has opened my mind to the possibility of seeing different places. Some day, I'd love to explore Spain, Germany and Australia.

If I did not have a full-time job, I would have kept my job as a receptionist at the Center for Safety and Change answering hotline calls for victims of domestic violence who needed help and support. I would be actively applying for jobs and hopefully going on interviews! Well, I'm actually not heading off to work. I'm taking a few months to finish a novel, then going abroad to teach English after that.

Speaking at an undergraduate commencement ceremony today, Arnold Schwarzenegger, acclaimed actor and action hero, spoke to a gathering of thousands of facult, students, and proud family members.

He first addressed the expectant crowd with a heartfelt question: "Who is your daddy, and what does he do? Having had some experience with aliens and nuclear devices before, he offered his advice to the crowd.

He said that the terrorists, whatever their names are, to "get ready for the big surprise," because "one of us is in deep trouble. Surprised, he quickly ran over to the class valedictorian, Arthur Telle, and requested his help.

When he was finished and the boy sat naked and humiliated, whimpering on the stage, Arnold gave him advice he would never forget. He berated the students, whose basic skills tests rank rather low on the chart of industrialized nations, for their laziness, which he attributed the bad economy to. Turning to him again, he said, "Let me speak to your mother. He asked the students gathered in the hot June sun to sit back and reflect on their education, saying that in the banquet of life, the biggest course was, indeed, education.
